the Rev and I are doing a DSNLG comic. The idea is to keep some sort of narrative going but still let it flow like a usual DSNLG…with different styles and ideas.

20 years ago, March 10, 2003
Lincoln

sorry about the legibility…I had to use my own scribblin’ for this first one

RevDrLuv

Yo, check my hair! That *@^! is dope.

This is great. I can’t wait to get started on my response.

inman

THAT is choice!

fashionvictim

This is really cool, I can’t wait to see how this develops.

bharper

thats great! the old school boys drinkin beers.. talking art!

randy

I love how every picture of Abe’ is different. Nice touch.

tacosaurus

You know I hold all the copyrights to any and all photographs of Ole’ Honest Abe, you didn’t did you? Well I purchased them months back on E-Bay. Perhaps a little permission request is in order? “My initial reaction is NO… but I’ve got a bit of Yessie aftertaste” -My Collection of civil war profilactics goes to the first person who can name the origin of that quote!

you can view many of my other aquisitions here Tacosaurus’s Bewildering Collection of Prescious Certificates.

heavy

hey RDLV how bout you try saving some US economy? lincoln this a great image!!

RevDrLuv

You better slow your roll! I got a couple dsnlgs to attend to before I get back to ours heavy. But I have good things in store, oh yes.

inman

Who’s the dude talking to Lincoln?

Lincoln

he’s actually Saudi prince, Abdullah Bin Abdelaziz… but I just wanted a middle eastern person that wasn’t Saddam or Osama

Lincoln

yeesh, RDL, you do have your hands full…and I’m eager to get into this one…if anyone wants to do something comic related (that isn’t “us sitting chatting in a bar”…I’ve got that one covered) or anything interesting, hit me up on my pager. I keep it on vibrate.

jeromius

ha ha ha - I love this. I especially like how you’ve managed to capture the essence of DSNLG in just 4 frames.

I can’t wait to see the next installment

2one2

i’ve had that conversation so many times lately. (the first two bars of the comic at least) }••{

inman

Lincoln, Lincoln, I’ve been thinking, what the hell have you been drinking?

Okay, I really haven’t been…where the hell is the Good Dr.? I’m eager for the next installment…or 6-7 :D

Lincoln

taco…re: your last comment above…from millinia ago, -Run Ronnie Run, now hook me up with those profilactics.

they’ll come in handy cuz ‘I just got a civil war corpse for a BYOCWC party, and it helps me keep the cops off my ass when I’m in the carpool lane’

name that quote, and I’ll see your profos double or nuthin.

Lincoln

and BTW nice use of my mug on YH

tacosaurus

I just realized it is 4|20… should I be gettin’ stoned?

RevDrLuv

Only if you can share!

RevDrLuv

Been too long… maybe we can wrap this up.

Just trying to continue the dialogue while playing with different styles.

RevDrLuv

Sorry if my writing is hard on the eyes, was trying to keep it looking sort of rough and in progress.

RevDrLuv

Oh and the brown mark is a shadow from a sketch book. I thought about taking it out, but because of reasons stated before I left it.

This was just a photo taken as soon as I finished. No rehearsals, no re-takes.

Lincoln

HOLY BEJESUS! Its a miracle! I must be all kinds of drunk by now. Get this ban a meer!

looks great. you’ve gotta scan that first panel for me at better rez. your outfit rocks. you look like a quaker carebear or something.

only complaint - I wish the shadow was less saturated

inman

Oh, that has the hotness. Beautiful. I really dig the style, especially in the last two panels where the speech bubbles are rounding out the top of the panel.

Rev. Dr. Qukr. Care Bear. If that’s not a visual prompt for the next image I don’t know what is!

RevDrLuv

thx

Well since Lincoln made me super fly I had to run with it. I am not sure what that is on my head??? A wig?

fashionvictim

this rocks!!! yay, for old skool designologues.

what i really dig about this last one is the juxtaposition of the heavy informative content vs. the relaxed style.

sweet! it’s nice to see you’re keepin productive while i’m slavin away at work ;D

tacosaurus

somebody pinch me…

bearskinrug

Great job, Rev! And that’s a cool path for the dialogue to take; a very Scott McCloud-ish approach.

tacosaurus

Damn, I just realized that Lincoln won my profilactics…

bharper

haha… she said she’s working (i.e. bringing home the bacon) and YOUR NOT!

muauauauauhhhahahhaa

inman

What are you on about Ben? We should all be so lucky!

RevDrLuv

Just cause I’m not a corporate full-timer doesn’t mean that I ain’t bringing home the dough. I’m doing a’ight.

Lincoln

Really enjoyed doing this one, hope it reads aight.

designoblah this designoblah that ;) Nat, you’re in charge of changing the subject. Inman should be payin us for this kinda promotion. I thought about changing it while i was working on it, but this was such a convenient way to avoid drawing 14 more panels.

19 years ago, April 26, 2004
RevDrLuv

hahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahaha

fashionvictim

This is not only witty and well written it is beautifully constructed. 4 stars.

This is definitely one of my favorite designologues of all time!

Lincoln

thanks FV and my apologies to the Reverend. In reality I’d be the dopey one in the conversation, but it’s my comic, now isn’t it?

and I thought this was kinda funny…I looked up ‘layman’ to check the spelling (see? dopey. i dunno, it just didn’t look right) but the 1st definition is: 1 : a person who is not a member of the clergy

see, that’s funny cuz he’s a reverend…and i called him a… forget it…he’s not a real reverend anyway

RevDrLuv

No apologies needed… I actually like my online persona so much that I am busy constructing a real-life version of the rev’s digs. Anyone want to come hang in LA wit me once they are done? We could have a design-o-comic-con!

Basseq

I like that one a lot… I agree wholeheartedly with fv.

fashionvictim

—one more thing, i really dig the typography. really well executed. what typeface is that in the thought bubbles?

mort

Awesome ‘logue!

Lincoln

that’s Garamond.

inman

Best episode ever! Nice cameo by the ‘saurus too.

Beerad

great, the texture on the paper.. I can just feel it.

xavi

amazing man

bearskinrug

Awesome Lincoln! Very tight -

Where you really trained in sequential art?

RevDrLuv

Yeah he was, but that foolio shoulda been a designer cause he is so good at it and he doesn’t even want to do sequential art professionally!

But his comics are the shiznit, if I had a printing co. I would produce em.

commudesmax

this one is ROCKS~~~~ I only wish the dinosauces (mispelled) come back soon^_^

bharper

the only thing is that we already did the psuedo self reflective dsnlg reference logue… but Lincoln, the last panel of your last image is very well crafted and makes me enjoy the theme all over again. is sequential art really a thing?

RevDrLuv

One can never have enough psuedo self-reflective dsnlg reference logues… never!

inman

“Is sequential art really a thing?” Are you serious?

Somebody spank him.

cowpiesurprise

Damn, Lincoln, this is slick. Reminds me a bit of Chris Ware (which you must know is a big compliment) with a more rigid grid. Very nicely done!

Lincoln

rock, I’m really glad you picked up on that. I had him in mind when I started it, but then I kinda lost site of it along the way. wasn’t quite as clean. plus, I didn’t have space for the designy flourishes he does, with all these damned panels

sanguine

I haven’t been here in awhile and just saw this for the first time (image #3). May I ask what is up with using one of my old pieces in this? In a forum with all designers I think it would be nice to ask to use my art.

Sincerely,

row three, colum 2, ‘web designer’ (or Crystal who worked VERY hard on that piece)

Lincoln

I’m sorry, good point. Alls I can say is that I wasn’t trying to rob, I was just trying to highlight some of my favorites, and like I say in the comic, show where I’ve learned from.

too late to ask for permission, I can at least cred the artists… (bottom tier, left to right) 1. mine no. 207: spring 2. sanquine no. 176: the RAVE UP!!! 3. jeromius no. 202: Safety First! 4. anethon no. 220: paint 5. bearskinrug no. 189: design=artisticretardation.com 6. mort no. 261: hip hop battle 7. my mangling of them

…my bad

inman

Hmm, in a designologue about Designologue I don’t see that appropriation as much of an issue. Did read any of this Designocomic, Crystal?

Mountains out of molehills if you ask me.

sanguine

I still think a heads up would have been nice. Of course I read it but I still think that it is unfair for someone else to get almost a perfect score while using others work in their dsnlg!

I give up. Everything I do here is unaccepted. After all of this I will no longer be a part of this ‘design’ community.

Thank you,

Crystal

*Both of you please check your email.

inman

Okay, now you’re really overreacting Crystal. The majority of this work is original illustration and entirely original commentary. Being a member of this community, I’m sure Lincoln’s oversight of giving credit was to due to the assumption that other participating members of the community would recognize the work.

Read the comic again, unattributed or not, he’s paying homage to the work cited—your work. Chill out. Storm out. Whatever.

Edit: I’m just grumpy today—allergies and art direction by committee—so be sure take everything I say with a grain of salt. Or better yet a sugar pill.

sanguine

I love how after the email you still dont mention any of the things that I brought up there about peoples work being stolen in other ways too. That clearly explained that this is my main concern.

inman

All that was mentioned in your email was the theft of Andy’s, strike that, I mean Randy’s image from movefast-standstill and I did all I could about that. I sent the offending party an email requesting that he remove the image from his site. I don’t hold the leash on images posted on this site. There’s nothing we can do to prevent people from misappropriating images on the web short of limiting everyone’s access to them.

Beerad

sanguine, wow… I have just joined on not to long ago and most of work doesn’t get a good score… which usally for good reasons. It is the comments that are important, when you get a low score and lack comments that hurts. I this is a great DSNLG its the use of the images that are important, look at the Illegal Art none of it is really theres they only used it to make something great.

RevDrLuv

Am I missing something here?!?!?!?

In a designologue don’t you take another’s art work and modify it, add to it, mix it up in some way to create something new that hopefully moves things on conceptually? I would hardly call that stealing. That is what you joined this site to participate in.

Sure you were not in direct logue with lincoln, but I was under the impression that we were all a community here doing the same thing.

And give me a friggin break. Your little close cropped contribution to this logue has NOTHING to do with the high score of this image. He could easily have payed homage to ANY OTHER dsnlg and gotten the same results. This image got such high scores because of craftsmanship and concept.

If you can’t take critique, stop creating anything.

RevDrLuv

Oh and I just checked your profile…

I would hardly call your image with a rating of 3+ “unaccepted”. Anything above a three means that it was widely accepted IMHO.

creighton

Yeah, to drop my two cents in, I just want to say that Sanguine, I had actually been wondering when you were going to show up on the scene again. I had thoroughly enjoyed the Rave-Up! DSNLG and was just thinking that there was very little female participation on this site and that your contributions to it were admired and respected…and that it was a shame that you hadn’t been around.

Now you’re back…with a vengeance. This site is called “Designologue”. It’s about a dialogue through design. When having conversation with people, in real life, is it not appropriate to converse about a topic? The idea of communication implies the context not existing in a void…if it did, there would be nothing to speak about.

As RevDrLuv said, this entire site revolves around people using other peoples’ images in order to create new ones. Everything builds on everything prior to it. And also as RevDrLuv said, the cropped version of your DSNLG in this piece is not what contributes to the score of this piece.

Also, I’d like to think that this community isn’t about scores anymore. To me it feels like we’ve moved onto a more comment-driven system…where those images that strike us in the right spot tend to get more conversation and idea generation rolling. That’s why I come here. For inspiration and feedback. I think we all come here…because it allows us to collaborate in a very loose, no-limits environment. We propell each other to do better with every image that is posted. It makes us want to do better.

Moreover…I can’t believe that stealing work would ever be brought up in this community. It would be one thing for someone to rip a design from a designologue and claim it as their own. Or to use it on their website. Or something along those lines. But the context of this piece doesn’t fall under that umbrella. This DSNLG pays homage to others that have inspired and influenced.

Blah. I’m done. Hell. I’m doing a DSNLG that relies on “stealing” imagery from another DSNLG entirely. Sheesh.

RevDrLuv

“I’m doing a DSNLG that relies on “stealing” imagery from another DSNLG entirely. Sheesh.”

Which is why I love that logue. Where else could you do this?

Like I said “One can never have enough psuedo self-reflective dsnlg reference logues… never!”

sanguine

THIS WAS MY MAIN POINT

>>It would be one thing for someone to rip a design from a designologue and claim it as their own. Or to use it on their website

I have a friend on here who had this happen. My main point was to bring this to everyones attention. We are designers and I thouhgt (other than myself) designers had ethics.

This person and I had talked about how some kind of watermark or SOMETHING could be implemented to help out.

I was not trying to start THIS I just wanted to inform everyone. I don’t see the issue.

The artist himself understood where I was coming from and was nice enough to email to talk. I think he understood it was more about the ethics of design than about this one instance.

:ding: round three :ding:

RevDrLuv

When we post stuff on the internet, be it on our own personal portfolio pages or here on designlogue, we always run the risk of being “ripped off.” It comes with the territory, there is nothing we can do about it other then NOT post on the internet.

DSNLG itself is mostly about the art of appropriation. ESPECIALLY the appropriation of each others artwork. I think it defeats the purpose if we have to ask each other if we can use an element of the others dsnlg. This forum thrives on it’s openess and the ability to rethink the meaning/method of a logue.

RevDrLuv

Oh and lincoln is a big softy and a pushover. He would probably agree with you no matter what you were saying.

^_–

inman

Haven’t you heard? There are no ethics of design on the internet. Get used to it. You’re preaching to the choir here.

PS: Did you ever catch me on a bad day! Sorry.

RevDrLuv

HA nice link. Is one of those yours?

inman

Not yet, sadly I’m not that revered. ;D

RevDrLuv

Ah yes, the true mark of web design success.

creighton

… [EDIT]

zdoob

i just wanted to add that i would’ve been totally psyched and honored if Lincoln had used one of my images. i’m flabbergasted that anyone would consider it a rip-off around here.

i think of this community as art school (never went) - where we’re expected to experiment in an “all bets are off” sort of environment. there are guidlines and ethical/copyright restraints in our comercial work… but here we can freely create whatever we want (more or less). it’s a place to break free from the binds many of us have in our design-for-work selves. i cherish that about DSNLG.

creighton

Since this is the hott topic right now, I’m announcing the re-design of my site:

THE NEW HOTTNESS: MIKECREIGHTON.COM

note: This may be in bad taste, but take it with a grain of salt. I’m trying to give everyone a little chuckle right now considering the intensity of this thread and have to pay homage to my favorite designer in this community. I won’t be leaving this one up for long, so catch it while you can.

p.p.s. Please be easy on me.

RevDrLuv

That is SO awesome! You are my new hero.

Oh and zdoob… werd

inman

Hahaha, look at the source! Straight up ImageReady slices! Stored in the /dumbimages/ directory! And the way it loads…

Jesus, you DO rule!

On a side note, you have seen my site in FireFox right? There’s missing functionality in IE on the PC. You comp is actually of ShauInman.com limited.

OMFG, 1337!!1!1! ROFTLMAO!!!1!1!

Lincoln

that’s great creighton. you know, I’ve never really liked your work, but this new style is looking good.

inman

For posterity (some of the images might still be uploading—there’s like 2,000 of them), hahaha.

I’ve finally made it. I’ve been hardcore pimpirated. I can die happy.

creighton

“On a side note, you have seen my site in FireFox right?”

Fire-WHAT? Who the hell uses anything besides IE 6 on WinXP? And who cares about “other” browsers anyway? Of course it’s the IE version. Sheesh.

I’m awesome. Nuff said.

bharper

omg. how did i miss this?

sanguine, on the one hand, i want to shake you and say, STFU. on the other hand, i do sympathize with not feeling accepted. i felt that way when i first started posting here. I think it’s a common feeling among web designers and artists in general. that is after all what gives us our sensitivty and creativity. However, I think most likely you are wrong. Most of us don’t have enough time to form concrete opinions about people, or actively accept people.

Over time, hopefully you can see that you are just as acccepted, or unaccepted as the rest. No one ever told me I was “accepted” but one day (probably after i posted the picture of myself in a girls pink silk night gown on the toilet) I felt accepted.

inman

Wow Ben, your insensitivity almost surpasses my own. But you’re honest and in the end you don’t mean wrong. I wouldn’t say you’re accepted but you are growing on me ;D

randy

Ahem, it was my image that was stolen not Andy’s and by the way I see the theft as the highest form of flattery. Have any of you heard of FREE CULTURE dot org? There’s a revolution happening, albeit a “can’t beat ‘em join ‘em” style revolution but a revolution none-the-less… It’s time to stop the butchering of the intent in copyright laws. They weren’t drawn up to simply hold creators works hostage but to fester a growing artistic community… Check the history.

commudesmax

Rev Dr. Luv,

Congrats you get the job, but I want to see design-o-comic~~~ gimmie

cJw

I just found this and it ownz. I want it to continue; pweez!

Who’s with me!?

RevDrLuv

Bringing back the dead.

18 years ago, August 11, 2005
fashionvictim

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sweetness.

inVZbl

talk about a revival… nice work…

sketchygirl

The barkeeper’s tattoo looks like a butt

: P

RevDrLuv

Oh yeah! Well your just angry bout me not accepting your logue. Hey look I’ve tried multiple times. Keep getting the same error no matter what browser I use.

Not my fault!

: p

…and if that is a butt, then what is the circle part supposed to be?

inman

Huzzah! What’s this about an error now?

Lincoln

holy mutha frickin canoli i’m in disbelief.

total shock

mostly about that butt.

looks great nat. even worth the wait. Diggin’ the lettering. well synched to the etchy looking drawings

and the bendy straws rock. i work with a guy that drinks beer through a straw all the time.

aiight, I had other plans for my day off today, but I think i know what i must do instead. Off to the ol’ secret lair to research.

RevDrLuv

Thanks!

Oh and the error. Every time try to accept Sketchy’s logue, I get a syntax error and obviously nothing happens. Want a screen shot Inman?

inman

Yes please! This really is beautiful Nat.

RevDrLuv

Thanks Shuan!

I just sent the screenshot to your dsnlg account.

So just who is it that Lincoln spied in the last frame anyway? Anyone want to venture a guess?

inman

.hiro?

RevDrLuv

What would .hiro look like?

RevDrLuv

Hurrah! Your fix seems to have worked Shuan. Got the confirmation email and everything. Now the question is… does Sketchy still want to do the logue?

inman

“What would .hiro look like?” A confused kid with the mumps? You can find his piece that I’m referring to in the gallery the WWD07 site. Click the book cover twice, then “Gallery,” then click “Next” 5 times. Stupid Flash.

(Glad the fix worked. I would say I rock if it wasn’t my mistake in the first place.)

zdoob

sweet jeezus! this is fantastic. i’m so excited that this DSNLG will continue. nice work Rev… and congrats on the marriage!

tamashii

Fantastic!

I think I am just going to continue to lurk and watch these masters spin their trade.

I am so glad this thing is once again amongst the living. Zombies are so kewl.

/*— Great work!

My favorite ‘Logue is image 3: I enjoy the reality of the style, characters of history in a more modern atmosphere, the random passing-by of a t-rex, and the addition of photographic images in a “Sequential” board. The use of bearskin’s DSNLG in the third-to-last panel is also a great reference.

I’m excited about seeing this work continue! —*/

RevDrLuv

Dammit Lincoln I’m on to you. Doing comics on the side while this is here gathering dust. You work in a goddamn comic store. NO EXCUSES. For christsakes get on it!

inman

Who is it? Who is it!?

RevDrLuv

I’ve been wondering this myself, for more than a year. Lincoln?
